-Used indentured servants for labor early on, only later turned to slaves
-An indentured servant is a European who signs a contract to work for 4 to 7 years in exchange for passage to America and a land after they are freed
-Produced Tobacco, Furs, Indigo, and Rice
-Tended to displace natives instead of conquer them
-Many European colonist moved because of religious persecution at home
-Example: Puritans
